December 8, 2007 - Rock Essentials Winners
It's taken awhile, but we have the winner of the Christian Rock Band Essentials contest (aka name all the stupid stuff in that ridiculous picture).
Nobody got all 20 items correct, but we had several good and entertaining responses.
And the winner is... Scott Rainey of Washougal, Washington! Scott received a total of 17 points! Scott edged out a few others with correct answers (and bonus points) for nailing the 1985 Knott's Berry Farm poster and somehow conjuring up the correct answer for #10, a parking ticket.
Scott will win a free copy of the upcoming 441 Broken Live CD when it is released (slated for first quarter 2008).
Here's the picture with the number map, followed by Scott's entertaining responses and the correct answers:

(Scott's answers)
- 1. Adam Again “In A New World of Time” record album cover. Mucho props to Gene (RIP) and co. for getting Rev. Howard Finster to do the artwork (I recall his writing something to the effect of “Adam Again – the best band in the world” somewhere on it… or maybe it said something about Gene, Riki and Paul being the best musicians ever… how cool was that?) (correct, 1 pt.)
- I’m thinking it’s Leslie Phillips’ “The Turning” album. (incorrect, 0 pts.)
- U2 – Boy album cover. (1 pt.)
- Coca-Cola Classic can. I have a copy of Life magazine from 1968 with a Coke ad in it, showing an original Coke bottle from the 1880's and a (then) modern Coke bottle... declaring how they'd NEVER change the classic formula. (Granted, they already had, since truly classic Coke had cocaine in it...) (1 pt.)
- That’s not a bottle of Widmer Hefeweizen? No, not from a Christian band. (Hide the beer, the pastor’s here…) Must be a bottle of Thomas Kemper root beer. (0 pts.)
- Some nifty acoustic guitar – a Martin or a Taylor, possibly a Guild? (1 pt.)
- iPod, baby! (Though it looks really chunky… perhaps an LG Chocolate phone?) (1 pt.)
- Comatose bass player (1 pt.)
- Flyer for the 1985 Knott’s Berry Farm Jubilation night you boys played at (I was there – my first exposure to Christian music!!) (1 pt. + 1 bonus pt.)
- Um… parking ticket? (1 pt. + 1 bonus pt.)
- Good grief… it looks like the logo for AD circa the mid-80’s, but I can’t say for sure… (0 pts.)
- That there’s the “Sacrifice” CD – one of my prized possessions! (1 pt.)
- 441 homepage. Very cool. (1 pt.)
- Mmm… Little Caesar’s…. (1 pt.)
- Wavy Lay’s Hickory Barbeque: proof for the non-believer in the existence of God. (1 pt.)
- Methinks someone’s cell phone… a Samsung? Korean stuff is pretty good these days, unlike the ’86 Hyundai I drove in high school… (1 pt.)
- Uh… what? (0 pts.)
- A 45 RPM single from the boys… maybe “Mourning into Dancing,” the single version that got such great airplay on KYMS? (0 pts.)
- Self-titled 441 LP. Also in my collection – I was sooooo stoked when you guys finally put it on CD. Finally. (1 pt.)
- It could be just a plain ol’ Fender bass, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s a G&L bass, hand-built right there in the OC. (1 pt., even though he got the make wrong).
The correct answers (some comments by Glenn):
- Adam Again's "In a New World of Time" (we had the original art hanging in Blue Collar Records World Headquarters when Gene and I were working with Harry. An impressive piece. My favorite saying from it is "ADAM AGAIN, The five good singer of our times 1985" Rest in Peace, Howard and Gene)
- Undercover's "Boys and Girls Renounce the World!" LP
- U2 - Boy (more than any other thing, the biggest reason I got into music)
- Coke can
- Pacifico bottle
- My ovation acoustic
- iPod with blue rubber case
- Me, Glenn Holland, bass player of 441
- Knott's Berry Farm concert poster from 1985. (this was our first Knott's/amusement park gig. We shared the stage with Crumbacher where the dolphins used to be. It was huge for us. What was amazing is how big Stryper was at the time, they played with Undercover in the main auditorium. That was big time rock and roll.)
- Parking ticket from John Wayne airport. (went in really quick to get my bag. Came out and they were writing me a ticket. Why don't you go stop some real crime, OCSD?)
- Design of 441 Anthology CD, now since scrapped in favor of Broken Reunion Live CD
- 441 - "Sacrifice" CD
- My laptop, with www.441online.com up
- Partially eaten pizza, can't remember where from. (we had a place in Arcadia, Lamp Post pizza. Really greasy and flat, but good. John Giali loved it.)
- Lays Wavy Hickory Barbecue chips. I love chips.
- My cell phone at the time, an LG (Scott even got the country of origin right, amazing!) I now carry a Blackberry Curve. Can't live without it.
- 441 - "Mourning Into Dancing" (overall, our best record. The biggest handicap is the great production. Great for 1985, but I think it dates the record and masks some solid songs. I'd love Jeff Saltzman to remix it.)
- The one nobody got! A 45 single from Common Bond. The tracks are "Matter of Time" on the A side and "Modern World" on the B. Common Bond was Doug Doyle, who engineered and produced our first record, on guitar, Kenny Samuels on vocals, Terl Bryant/Chuck Cummings on drums and Bruce Swift on bass. Kenny and Bruce also sung some background vocals and Terl did percussion on our record.
- 441 - "441"
- My Wayne Charvel-built bass, retrofitted by John Gaudesi in the 90's. The only bass I've ever had.
The honorable mentions:
- Kris Harken - 15 1/2 points - one for imagination, well done, Kris!
- "jonodude" - 15 points, bonus point for noting it was a Charvel bass
- Tim from the Christian New Wave website. 14 points.
- Special notation to Pritham Raj, who didn't necessarily score as highly, but added some great stories and flair to his response. Thank you.
This was silly and fun. Remember Viv Savage's sage advice, "have a good time, all the time."
